Mirus Stars: 2025 Semi-Finalists

Lead sponsor for 2025

Brecon

Amanda O’Sheehan

Mirus team member

Amanda volunteered to work all day on Christmas Day to make it special for the person she supports, who had shared that she has no happy Christmas memories.

Amanda went out in her own time to buy and wrap all the presents the person she supports wanted. Amanda also made sure the person she support’s favourite meat and vegetables were ready for Christmas dinner.

On Christmas Day, Amanda dressed up as an elf to make the occasion even more special. This thoughtful effort not only created happy memories for the person she supports but also allowed the rest of the staff team to spend Christmas with their loved ones.

Chris C

Supported by Mirus

Chris takes great pride in his home, where he lives alongside Julie. He plays an active role in making sure their home runs smoothly and supports Julie in a way that is both kind and encouraging.

Chris gently encourages Julie to be involved in household tasks and supports her to do as much as she can independently. Mirus team members shared lovely feedback about the care and respect he shows – including that he won’t go to bed at night until he knows she’s tucked up and settled. Chris’ thoughtfulness and sense of responsibility truly stand out.

Dan Wilks

Mirus team member

Dan consistently goes above and beyond to support his colleagues and the people we support. Even during busy periods, he always finds time to help others and advocate strongly for the people supported by Mirus. He ensures that any changes being considered never compromise the quality of support provided.

Recently, Dan responded swiftly and calmly in a challenging situation, preventing a serious accident and supporting the person involved with compassion and care. Afterwards, he took the lead in reviewing what happened, putting thoughtful measures in place to help prevent a similar situation in future. Dan is a skilled and compassionate leader who brings calm, dedication, and initiative to everything Danhe does. His commitment to supporting others is clear in every aspect of his work.

Josh G

Supported by Mirus

Josh has recently moved into a new Mirus service in Brecon. I wanted to nominate him for being empowering as I have heard lots of feedback that he is empowering the others he lives with to become more independent & has taken a lead in encouraging them to do more.

Josh was being supported by a member of staff who became ill on shift, Josh acted calmly and quickly to get help. Josh raised the alarm with the next door neighbour before phoning on call while someone else phoned an ambulance. Josh made sure the other people in the house continued with what they were doing in order for everyone to stay calm. The staff member was then able to make her way to hospital after other staff were contacted to cover the house.

Victoria Fletcher

Mirus team member

If you looked up the word ‘Responsible’ in the dictionary, you would find a picture of Vicky next to it….. Vicky has been with the organisation for a number of years…more than you can count on your fingers and toes.
As all with testify, Vickys dedication to the People we Support and her team is unquestionable. Each shift, Vicky takes responsibility, leads by example and ensures tasks are completed meticulously, ensuring the People we Supports days go as well as possible, their bills are paid, their home is cosy and well maintained and bellys are full…
The main reason for this nominations Vickys unwavering dedication and determination to ensure the People we support have their physical and mental health needs met. Over the years Vicky has gone above and beyond to advocate for individuals who could have quite easily been overlooked. Standing strong with health professionals, never giving up and making a difference. Because of Vickys determination, guidance and strong voice, 2 People we support in Brecon are receiving care that they could have missed out on via the NHS. Thank you Vicky and keep shining like the star you are!

Harry A

Supported by Mirus

Harry has made an incredible start in his new home and has settled in wonderfully. From the very beginning, he embraced the chance to learn new skills and take a more active role in his daily life.

He is now confidently doing things he hadn’t had the opportunity to try before—like hoovering, preparing meals, using kitchen appliances, washing dishes, and doing his own laundry. Each day, Harry grows more independent and self-assured, showing real pride in what he can do.

After spending a long time in hospital, Harry is now enjoying getting out into the community every day. He loves visiting local shops, having meals in cafés, and exploring new places on walks. These experiences have given him a renewed sense of freedom and happiness.

Harry has truly embraced this new chapter with courage and enthusiasm. His own words capture his journey best: “Wow, I’ve found myself again—I’m alive.”

Harry’s story is one of rediscovery, growth, and joy. He continues to inspire everyone around him with his positivity and determination.

Alex J

Supported by Mirus

Alex has shown incredible courage and flexibility over the past year. After living on his own with full support for several years, he recently welcomed someone new into his home—a big change that took real strength and understanding.

Alex adapted with patience and openness. He adjusted to changes in his environment, began sharing spaces and routines, and showed great empathy toward the person moving in. Throughout the process, Alex was involved every step of the way, helping him understand and feel comfortable with the changes around him.

His ability to stay positive, engage with others, and build a friendly relationship with his new housemate has been truly inspiring. Alex has shown how kindness, patience, and courage can turn a big life change into a success story.

Haydn N

Supported by Mirus

Haydn has shown incredible courage over the past 18 months. He had always loved swimming, but hadn’t been for more than five years. When the team began supporting him to return to this activity, they used a gentle, step-by-step approach to help him feel comfortable and confident again.

At first, Haydn chose to sit on a chair by the pool, watching staff swim and joke together in the water. He laughed along, enjoying the fun and connection of the moment without needing to take part himself. Over time, and with patient encouragement each week, Haydn began sitting on the poolside, splashing his legs and engaging more with the experience.

After months of building trust and familiarity, the big moment came — Haydn decided to step into the hot tub. He smiled, relaxed, and enjoyed the water, chatting and laughing with staff throughout.

This was a huge milestone for Haydn, achieved through patience, determination, and courage. What began as a challenge has become a joyful part of his week again — a real example of what can be achieved through persistence, trust, and a supportive approach.

Bridgend

Richard Simmons

Mirus team member

Richard stepped up and assisted a colleague in the Bridgend office when they collapsed. When an ambulance was delayed, he stepped up and offered his car to take her to a&e

Richard really stepped up today when a member of staff collapsed at the Bridgend office, he selflessly offered his assistance and helped me take the staff member to A&E in his car as an ambulance was not available for hours. He was calm and helpful in a difficult situation. He also offered to collect us from the hospital when we were done. Thanks Rich :)

Lauren Richards

Mirus team member

Lauren Richards went above and beyond her duties as a support staff worker when Richard Colbridge experienced a serious fall and was admitted to hospital via ambulance. Although her long sleep shift, into a day shift had officially ended at 5pm, Lauren chose to attend to the hospital, ensuring Richard’s safety and wellbeing throughout the incident. Lauren was with in hospital and returned home after he was safely discharged at approximately 9pm.

Lauren’s actions exemplify the Mirus value of being responsible. She demonstrated exceptional commitment, compassion, and professionalism by prioritising the needs of the person she supports, even outside of her scheduled working hours. Her dedication made a significant difference during a distressing situation for Richard and his family, and reflects the highest standards of care and responsibility.

Dorial Braund

Mirus team member

Dorial hosted a macmillan coffee morning at her service with the people supported involved, it was a lovely day for the people supported and staff from other services getting together to donate and eat lots of cake for a good reason, Doriel raised a massive £115.00

—

Because she always thinks of you even when she not on shift 💯 all rounder.

Cardiff

Michelle M

Supported by Mirus

Michelle lives with her friend Elaine, who is 20 years older than her. They have been close friends for many years and share a lovely friendship.

Michelle has seen the changes in Elaine’s health as she has gotten older, but she takes it all in her stride and adapts to Elaine’s needs. Michelle is very patient, always happy to explain what’s happening in TV programmes if Elaine doesn’t understand or repeat things if Elaine doesn’t hear them properly. Nothing is ever too much trouble for Michelle when it comes to helping Elaine.

When they are out in the community, Michelle walks at Elaine’s pace and helps her with her walker when needed. Michelle supports Elaine with her shopping and makes sure her handbag is safe.

Michelle also volunteers in a charity shop and often buys little gifts for Elaine out of her own money – things she knows Elaine will like or find useful, especially bracelets. Michelle always encourages Elaine, checks that she’s okay, and takes a genuine interest in everything Elaine does.

Their friendship is special, and they have built many happy memories together, which they love to look back on. I would love to see Michelle recognised for her kindness, patience, and the care she gives to Elaine. Everyone needs a friend like Michelle in their life.

Supported by Mirus

Jonathan is a fantastic person who always goes the extra mile to support good causes. Whether raising money for Cancer Research or promoting Autism Acceptance Week, his dedication to helping others is truly amazing.

In March, Jonathan is taking on the challenge of walking 10,000 steps a day for eight days, from March 26th to April 2nd, as part of the Walk for Autism campaign. Jonathan’s goal is to raise awareness, increase understanding, and raise money to support autistic children and adults.

Alongside his walking challenge, Jonathan has arranged extra fundraising events, such as a coffee morning and cake sale, showing his passion for making a real difference in the community.

Craig Hyatt

Mirus team member

Craig has been fantastic, working alongside his team leaders and manager to provide support across all teams.

Craig has also gone above and beyond by covering shifts in different clusters to help with providing support where it’s needed. This is a perfect example of exceptional teamwork and leadership.

I am so pleased to have him as one of my team leaders.

Bonita Parsons

Mirus team member

Bonita stepped up with energy and dedication to support two Mirus teams while a Team Leader was away. She worked closely with other leaders and the Area Manager to make sure everything ran smoothly, showing excellent teamwork and leadership.

Bonita was always willing to go the extra mile and kept things on track with a calm, positive approach. Her support was invaluable, and she helped make sure that the return to usual arrangements was smooth and well-managed.

Stephanie N

Supported by Mirus

Stephanie’s a familiar face at the Stronger Communities group—she rarely misses a session, and always shows up with warmth and energy.

What stands out is the way she looks out for other people. She checks in, makes sure everyone feels included, and helps to create a space that’s welcoming and supportive. It’s not something she’s been asked to do—she just does it, because that’s who she is.

She brings a lovely balance of humour, care, and thoughtfulness to the group, and she’s a big part of why it works so well.

Neda Arshadi

Mirus team member

I’d like to recognise Neda for the care and thought she’s put into creating something that didn’t exist before—but really needed to.

She saw that there wasn’t a women-only group for the people we support in Cardiff, and decided to set one up. It took real initiative and courage to do it, and she’s stuck with it to make sure it works well for the people who come along.

The group is growing every week, and people have said how positive and welcoming it feels. Neda has made space for people to connect in a way that feels safe and right for them—and it’s made a real difference.

This is a great example of someone noticing a gap, listening to what matters, and making change happen.

Sam G

Supported by Mirus

Sam’s furthered his commitment to improving his health and wellbeing by signing up to a service that delivers fresh ingredients and healthy recipe cards to your door. Sam enjoys being involved in selecting his weekly meals using the planner, and is using the recipes as a great way to develop his food preparation and cooking skills. Sam also attends weekly Zumba sessions with Cardiff Multisport, and swimming sessions in Cardiff Bay.

Laura I

Supported by Mirus

Laura has been actively involved with the Emergency Blanket Workshops in Cardiff right from the beginning. Originally led by the Crisp Packet Project, the emergency blanket workshops teach people to turn crisp packets, which would otherwise go to landfill, into blankets for people experiencing homelessness. Once made, the blankets are similar to emergency thermal blankets, that help keep in body heat and protect against wind and rain. Laura has collected crisp packets to use to make the blankets, and has encouraged lots of other people to do the same. She has attended all of the workshops that have been held so far, and has made countless crisp packed blankets. Laura has also gone an extra step, by donating, and encourage others to donate toys for children.

David R

Supported by Mirus

David has just been through lots of medical procedures which were difficult and restricting for him. He didn’t complain or refuse once and powered through the procedures! He’s now feeling much better.

Steven Wood

Mirus Respite team member

Steven is a Cardiff City season ticket holder and attends all home games in his personal time. Steven supports two brothers on CCX who love football, especially Cardiff City and Steven arranged with their family to be able to support them both to attend a game. Steven arranged this in his own time and did not want to be paid for supporting them as he said ‘I would be attending anyway and it was just great to see their faces and how much of a positive impact it had on them, it makes it all worth it’.

Cathryn W

Supported by Mirus

Cathryn has been with Mirus for just under a year where previously she lived with her family. Cathryn has never lived with anyone outside of her family before and has now settled in lovely! She has taken tasks on that she has never done before and is not afraid to give things a go! With a bit of encouragement and praise, Cathryn will give anything a go! Cathryn has grown in confidence immensely over the last few months and even loves a little bit of cheeky banter! It has been a pleasure supporting Cathryn and seeing her confidence grow living in supported living! Well done Cathryn, I’m very proud of you!

Craig Hyatt

Mirus team member

Since joining the organisation just a year ago, Craig has quickly become a valued and respected member of the team. His positive energy, humour, and optimism are a welcome presence in every PATCH meeting, helping to foster a supportive and uplifting team culture.

Craig’s impact is clearly reflected in the feedback from families and professionals alike. A recent compliment from a family member described the care provided under Craig’s leadership as “spot on.” They went on to say:

“(…) My uncle is very well cared for by the team leader and staff. My recent visits this year, including on 17th July 2025, have surpassed more than I could hope or possibly imagine. His room, furnishings, aids, and surrounding areas such as the garden are faultless — a massive improvement… In fact, it is a pleasure to see and visit. I would like to add a huge thank you to the team leader and staff that made this possible.”

This heartfelt feedback speaks volumes about Craig’s commitment to quality care and his ability to lead meaningful change.

In addition to family feedback, Craig has also received high praise from the local authority. Their most recent compliment expressed appreciation for the outstanding work Craig is doing at Rookwood, particularly in supporting the transition of new PWS into the service. They specifically highlighted his skill in forming professional and supportive relationships with the family member, noting that this approach was instrumental in ensuring a smooth and positive transition experience.

Craig’s dedication to the wellbeing of both the people we support, and his team makes him an exemplary manager and a truly deserving nominee.

On behalf of Cardiff Managers:

We would like to express our sincere appreciation for Stephen Leahy’s excellent delivery of the Manual Handling Module G training at the Cardiff Patch meeting. The session was engaging, easy to follow, and highly relevant to the important responsibilities of managers.

Steve’s flexibility, helpfulness, and dedication truly stood out. Stephen consistently goes above and beyond to ensure staff are well-supported and able to attend training. His hard work makes a real difference, and we are incredibly grateful for his commitment.

Thank you, Steve, for all your efforts!

Sarah Viggers

Mirus team member

I’d like to nominate Sarah for living our “Together” value every day.

Sarah is always there to help — answering questions quickly, often before anyone even asks, and keeping things running smoothly behind the scenes. Their support helps the HRBPs manage their workloads more easily and confidently.

Even on their day off, Sarah steps in when something urgent comes up. They never hesitate to help, no matter how busy things are, and always stay friendly and calm.

Sarah’s commitment and teamwork make a big difference, and show what working together really means.

Owen Davies

Mirus team member

Owen has been an invaluable source of support for the managers in Swansea, especially in helping them develop their knowledge and confidence to take ownership of their budgets and financial responsibilities. His presence and accessibility have strengthened the connection between operational managers and the finance department, bridging gaps where there was previously a sense of disconnect. Owen’s expertise, approachable nature, and solution-focused mindset enable him to tackle challenges effectively, offering insights from both a financial and operational perspective.

Sian Morris

Mirus team member

I was recently feeling overwhelmed with certain situations that have come up. I realise that all services are feeling the impact of the new structure and adjusting to new roles and responsibilities, and support is harder to get now. However, I reached out to sian for advice and Guidance. Sian was really busy but i sent her a teams for guidance and support.
Sian went above and beyond to be supportive, put me in the right direction and explained things in a way that broke them down in smaller more realistic tasks. Sian even offered to do a HR session to increase mine and my collegues knowledge on certain things we wanted more guidance on.

This instantly calmed me and got me back on track, and i dont think she realised how just talking through things made me feel engaged again and confident.
Sian did this with such professionalism and kindness.

Thank you sian

Nia Matthews

Mirus team member

Nia went above and beyond to help me when i needed someone for guidance and support when working at Bridgend office, even though Nia had her own heavy workload and deadlines to complete, She not only gave support but also had empathy with my situation which gave me the drive i needed to complete my own task.

–I’d like to nominate Nia for consistently demonstrating the value of Together in everything she does. Nia is someone who brings people together, fosters collaboration, and always makes time to support her colleagues.

Recently, Nia went above and beyond by completing the Quality of Care reports outside of her normal working hours, stepping in to resolve a miscommunication around what was required. Her commitment ensured that deadlines were met and the team stayed on track.

She’s also been instrumental in creating a positive team atmosphere, encouraging open communication and celebrating shared successes.

Nia’s approach reminds us that when we work together, we achieve more—and we enjoy the journey along the way. Her kindness, teamwork, and willingness to step in wherever needed truly embody what Together means at Mirus.

Thank you, Nia, for being such a brilliant example of this value.

Gwent

Emily Roderick

Mirus team member

Emily recently supported the person she supports on a three-night holiday. Even though she has only been supporting him for six months, she handled the trip with great care.

During the holiday, the person she supports found it difficult to settle at night. Despite this, Emily stayed calm and confident, using the skills she has developed over the past six months.

Emily handled every challenge and made sure the person she supports enjoyed his holiday by taking him to visit places he was interested in during the day.

Mark J

Supported by Mirus

During a visit to Tintern Abbey, Mark pushed himself to step out of his comfort zone.

Mark chose to go into Tintern Abbey, walked through the gift shop, and patiently waited while staff checked if he needed to pay. Once inside, he explored the Abbey and took an interest in the information signs.

Once Mark had finished exploring, he went into a small tearoom, ordered and paid for a hot drink, and waited while it was made.

This is a big step for Mark as usually, he prefers to stick to his routine and seeing him trying new things was lovely.

Jacquinn V

Supported by Mirus

Jacquinn has previously struggled to be present in his local community. However, with the support of Mirus team members, he has recently become a regular visitor at a local pub, where he enjoys an evening meal.

Through consistent support and encouragement, Jacquinn has built confidence in this setting. The pub staff now recognise him and go the extra mile to accommodate his needs, providing a quieter area to help ease his anxieties and reduce triggers.

This achievement is a testament to Jacquinn’s courage and determination, and it’s wonderful to see him becoming more engaged in his community.

Lee Cannon &
Sharon Badham

Mirus team members

Lee and Sharon recently supported someone to explore places he hadn’t felt confident visiting for many years due to anxiety. During visits to Castell Coch and St Fagans, they gently encouraged him to take part in activities such as walking through the museum, exploring the exhibits, and enjoying a coffee at the café.

These may seem like everyday activities, but for the person supported, they marked a huge personal step. Lee and Sharon created a supportive environment that helped him feel safe and confident to try new things. Their patient, person-centred approach made a real difference, opening up new opportunities for him to enjoy his community.

Stephen D

Supported by Mirus

Steve started his support with Mirus eight months ago. He’s an inspiration to all of us at Kennard Court. Steve is non-verbal, he came to us with a limited vocabulary of a few words, he’s now up to thirteen words. His progress has been phenomenal, and he’s adapted well to his new home. All of us at Kennard Court couldn’t be prouder of his progress and are excited to see how far he can go!

Louise Redman

Mirus team member

Louise joined Mirus 5 years ago and on starting was capable of joining the management team, but she lacked confidence, so didn’t want to be put forward for a managers progression course, thinking she wouldn’t be able to do it. In April this year Louise overcome her doubts and applied for a Practice Leader role and was successful. I know she is going to be an amazing manager and am so proud of her for going for it. Well done Lou!

Joanne Davies

Mirus team member

Jo organised a Bank Holiday Roast Hog Day at Kennard Court inviting PWS families along.

Lots of family members attended and all PWS had an enjoyable time. Nice to see everyone engaging with one and other. Also future PWS attended with her family which was good to meet the team. This was all organised by Jo who also provided the food and catered. Top chef and she rocked the chefs hat. Well above and beyond such a lovely lady. Good time was had by all.

Barry J

Supported by Mirus

Barry moved into Stow Park Circle in July of this year. Since moving in Barry has been the perfect host in his new home, welcoming guests with a smile and a hand shake. Barry is always mindful of his co-tenants, being respectful of their space and feelings as well as being a good friend and role model. Barry loves to help out in the house and join in with cooking and other activities. Barry could also have been nominated in the Courageous category too as he has come out of his shell since moving in. Barry’s vocabulary and use of words is improving by the day, seeing him communication with his peers and staff becoming more relaxed. He’s also a complete legend in the humour department. Keep it up Barry.

Charlie W

Supported by Mirus

If I had to describe someone with the words from a song, they would be

“You can dance, you can jive
Having the time of your life
Ooh, see that girl, watch that scene
Digging the dancing queen”

Charlie is our very own Dancing Queen. In the short time Charlie has been living at Kennard home, Charlie has made a big impact, breathing a new, energising lease of life into Bleanavon. With her humour, wit, cheeky charm, makaton, karaoke skills and epic dance moves, Charlie is a wonderful force to be reconned with. Charlie has taken a big step at 21, moving into her own tenancy, learning new skills, making new friends whilst taking Kennard Court by storm. Keep dancing Charlie.

Michael C

Supported by Mirus

Have you ever wondered what it is like to be made to feel the most special person in the room? if you take a visit to Stow Park Circle when Michael is home, you will wonder no more!

The first time I met Michael I was bowled over by his charm, smile, respect and want to make you feel welcome and happy in is home. With an infectious smile, he greeted me and began to chat.

This treatment isn’t just for guests. Michael makes sure that his peers are happy and included at all times, always inviting them out on adventures (especially if it involves a bus ride). Nothing is too much trouble for this gentleman. He is one in a million.

Bethan James

Mirus team member

Empowering, Reliable, Responsible…. Queen of shift cover…. the list of acolades could go on.

Beth leads by example, giving others the courage to follow in her steps.

Beth ensures that not only her own service’s shifts are covered but those of her collegues at their services. Beth has worked with managers to help with rota management and give advice where needed. This has empowered other managers to do the same, strenghtening the region, pulling services and skills together. This kind of management is sometimes overlooked as there are not noticeable issues, however Beths hard work and sharing her knowledge is the reason there are no issues to highlight….. Thank you Beth.

Neath Port Talbot

Michael W

Supported by Mirus

Michael has been doing really well and engaging with his support to get out into the community. It has been wonderful to see him opening up to staff and taking part in activities.

Over the festive period, Michael joined in with Christmas activities, which was a big step for him. He enjoyed having Christmas dinner with his housemates and also joined them and staff to celebrate the New Year.

It’s great to see Michael building connections and friendships with others.

Huw Davies

Mirus team member

I am nominating Huw for this award because he is an amazing and energetic Support Worker who always puts a smile on everyone’s face – both the people we support and staff.

Huw is always upbeat and brings great banter and positive energy that the people we support love – there’s never a dull moment when he’s on shift! Huw even came in on Christmas Day, dressed as an elf and dancing, even though he wasn’t scheduled to work. That says it all!

I chose the value “together” because of a recent experience where I felt overwhelmed and emotional during a difficult situation.

I sent Huw a brief message and within minutes, he called me and reassured me that my feelings were normal.

Huw shared his own experiences dealing with similar situations, which really eased my anxiety. It meant so much to feel supported by a team member, and I truly appreciated this person’s kindness and understanding.

Natalie D

Supported by Mirus

Natalie is making great progress every day, always looking to grow and develop her independence. Natalie is bubbly and kind and never lets her disability define her.

Natalie always gives her best in everything she does.

Natalie’s determination and positive attitude continue to motivate everyone around her. Natalie’s strength and dedication to her personal growth make her truly deserving of this award.

Wendy Palmer

Mirus team member

I would like to nominate my support staff Wendy. I’m doing this because Wendy has supported me to be safe and ensuring that my physical and mental health needs are met. I have had a difficult couple of months and Wendy has supported me to come out of the other side a stronger person. Wendy has been quick to notice changes, leading to her quick thinking and responding with appropriate actions to ensure that I am safe in my home. Wendy is a great support worker who is committed to her job and supporting us all at Brookfield.

Charley Morris

Mirus team member

As everyone is aware I suffer with severe epilepsy and have seizures on a daily basis often having more then one, they have had a serious impact on my overall health both physically, emotionally and mentally but it has also impacted my self-esteem and self confidence. Firstly I would like to point out all the staff at Geriants house do an exceptional job supporting me with the needs I face due to my condition and often go above and beyond to ensure I have my dignity and that my views are respected. However this Mirus Moment is for Charley as she is extremely empathetic towards my needs as she has life experience of supporting close family with epilepsy, she takes the time to ensure I am safe and well and that I understand everything that is being said. When I need help coming back around she is always a calming influence, without Charley I would struggle to remain upbeat about my condition

Julie Evans

Mirus team member

Julie is very good at communicating, organising, problem-solving and leading. She also has a really kind and caring nature.

Julie has supported me through some difficult times and always makes sure I have the help I need. She gives me confidence in myself and has helped me to try new and exciting things that I didn’t think I could do before.

With Julie’s support, I’ve been able to get involved in new opportunities, including part-time work within Mirus.

Julie, you’re a great team leader and we all really appreciate everything you do. Keep up the good work!

Swansea

Shannon O

Supported by Mirus

Shannon has recently started doing more things independently. Shannon has always been a capable young lady but has struggled with the confidence to take the next step. Recently, Shannon has been encouraged to start using the bus on her own.

Although Shannon passed her travel training a year ago, she never felt confident enough to travel without staff.

Now, Shannon catches the bus home independently after an activity with her boyfriend or family, while keeping in touch with staff by phone. Shannon still feels nervous when the bus is busy, but she knows she can call staff for reassurance. Shannon’s confidence is growing, and she is very happy and proud to feel more independent.

Kayleigh Williams

Mirus team member

Kayleigh gives the best support to me and the people I live with.

If there are disagreements with the people I live with, Kayleigh always supports us to talk to each other about our feelings and find a solution.

Kayleigh will sit with us individually and then as a group to make sure everyone is heard, and we all agree on a solution. This has helped me to better understand and get along with the people I live with and has brought us closer together.

Kayleigh’s the best support worker ever! Thank you Kayleigh

Kelly Bent

Mirus team member

Kelly has played a key role in Swansea’s Wellbeing Walks over the past year, all while balancing her other responsibilities with great energy. She recently organised a sunny walk along the Swansea Canal in Clydach, creating a welcoming space for people we support and their teams to enjoy time together.

Kelly’s enthusiasm, creativity, and dedication have made a big difference. Her ability to bring people together and make wellbeing a priority is inspiring—thank you, Kelly!

Tara J

Supported by Mirus

Tara has faced some really tough challenges in recent months—including being unwell and losing her cat—but she’s met them with honesty, strength, and a determination to take charge of her own support.

She’s been open with staff, reached out for help when she’s needed it, and made some big decisions about what she wants and needs. It’s not always been easy, but she’s kept going, even on the hard days.

Tara’s resilience and willingness to speak up for herself deserve recognition. She’s taken real steps to stay in control of her own wellbeing, and that takes both effort and courage.

Nathan R

Supported by Mirus

Nathan is someone who quietly gets on with making life better for the people around him. He’s always there for his neighbours—picking up shopping, being a listening ear, and helping out when things are tough. He does it with real care and compassion. His sense of humour and easy-going nature uplift people when they need it most. Nathan doesn’t just offer help—he offers warmth, reassurance, and friendship. That’s something special, and it means a lot to the people around him.

Kelsey Flay

Mirus team member

It was a tough day at Park Road when one of the people we support had to take their much-loved cat to the vet. Sadly, the news wasn’t good, and it became clear that the kindest thing to do was to say goodbye.

Kelsey was brilliant throughout. She showed real care and calmness in what was an emotional and distressing situation. She stayed alongside the person, helped them take in what was happening, and supported them to make a very difficult decision.

Her kindness, steady presence, and sensitivity made a big difference that day. She didn’t just support practically—she offered real emotional support when it was needed most.

Michael Mort

Mirus team member

When someone we support became suddenly unwell, Michael acted quickly and calmly. He reassured them and got in touch with health professionals straight away. When their condition worsened, he called 999 without delay and clearly explained how serious things had become.

Michael followed the ambulance to hospital and stayed late into the night to make sure the person felt safe, supported and not alone during such a stressful time. Hospital staff later said how lucky she was that Michael had acted so fast.

Thanks to Michael’s quick thinking, care and dedication, he may have saved a life. His support didn’t stop at the emergency – he continued to show kindness and compassion throughout. We’re all incredibly grateful to have Michael on the team.

Sean P

Supported by Mirus

Katie Breeze

Mirus team member

Katie has shown real dedication in supporting a new gentleman with a visual impairment. She’s worked alongside him to build confidence in managing tasks such as shopping, banking, and attending appointments—things he had found difficult in the past.

Katie also took the initiative to complete specialist training in visual impairment, showing her commitment to providing inclusive, person-centred support. Her thoughtful and consistent approach has had a real impact, helping him feel more independent and in control of his daily life.

Berian J

Supported by Mirus

Berian had been a dedicated volunteer at the local food bank for two years, and its recent closure hit him hard—it was a big part of his routine, and something he cared about deeply.

But Berian didn’t let that stop him. With support from his team, he looked at what else he might enjoy and ended up joining the community gardens as a volunteer. He’s now helping out there twice a week—and loving it.

Berian has a real passion for gardening, and it’s been great to see him doing something that brings him joy while continuing to make a difference in the community. His willingness to adapt, and his commitment to helping others, are really inspiring.

Gabriel Smarandache

Mirus team member

Gabriel joined a new team recently and began supporting a young woman—something that hadn’t been done before in that service, as it’s the first time a male team member had supported a female person living there.

There was some understandable caution from the person’s family at first, but Gabriel’s respectful, calm and adaptable approach quickly made an impression. He’s built a great relationship with both the person he supports and her family, and they’ve said how much they value the support he’s giving.

It’s clear the person he supports feels at ease with him—she shows it in the way she responds to him and the time they spend together.

Gabriel’s made what could have been a tricky transition feel smooth and natural. He’s become a trusted part of the team and is already making a positive impact.

Amy Crockett

Mirus team member

Amy has worked closely with a young lady for several years. Recently, the young lady had been exhibiting behaviors that made it increasingly challenging for the support staff to engage with her effectively. Recognising the impact this was having on the young lady’s well-being, Amy took proactive steps by maintaining regular contact with relevant professionals to explore strategies that could enhance her quality of life.

One of Amy’s key suggestions was to trial 1:1 community outings, instead of the usual 2:1 support ratio. This change meant the young lady wouldn’t always have to wait for a second staff member to be available, increasing her opportunities to access the community and engage in activities more spontaneously.

This approach was trialled and has proven successful. The young lady is now able to visit local places with one staff member, which has led to increased community participation, reduced behaviors of concern, and improved sleep patterns. Thanks to Amy’s initiative and continued advocacy, the young lady is enjoying more independence and a significantly better quality of life.
