Laura follows her dreams

Laura can find new situations challenging, however with the support of mirus, she secured a volunteer position at a children’s play scheme in her local community. This was Laura’s first volunteering experience, and although she was nervous, she couldn’t wait to get started.

Laura says: “I’m good with kids, and wanted a volunteer placement where I could put my skills to good use.”

Laura volunteered with Torfaen Play Service throughout August 2019. Volunteering gave Laura her a real sense of responsibility and will aid her to achieve her longer-term goal of being her own appointee and living more independently.

Laura went on to win Torfaen Play Scheme’s Play Worker of the Summer Holidays 2019 Award in recognition of her commitment to volunteering.

Julian, Service Manager at Torfaen Play Scheme says: “Laura excelled in her support for the children. Every day she turned up on time, with enthusiasm and excitement.”

Leading a full life is important to Laura, and she loved developing new relationships and skills through the play scheme. This experience has already led to further opportunities for Laura, and she’s now enrolled to undertake a course in Health and Social Care, alongside continuing to volunteer for Torfaen Play Scheme.

Charlotte, mirus Practice Lead says: “Laura has come so far since moving in a year ago – the future is looking good for her. I’m so proud of her achievements.”
