Learning Disability Week: Seen. Heard. Valued.

This week is Learning Disability Week

The theme for 2026 is “Do you see me?” and is all about people with a learning disability being seen, heard and valued. But are people really being listened to? Are their views helping shape the decisions that affect their lives?

At Mirus, listening to people and working with them to make the changes that they want to see, is a huge part of how we work.

Just one of the ways we do this is through our Better Together process, which helps us to understand what’s working well in people’s lives and with their support, and what needs to improve.

We continuously invite people we support and their families to share their views with us – including through surveys, person-centred planning conversations, and at Better Together events held in every region that we work in.

This week is the start of our Better Together events, and we’ve already held one for people who live in Powys and Bridgend.

These events bring people together to talk about what’s important to them, celebrate progress, and identify the things that matter most for the future. And of course, to have lots of fun with friends!

Listening also means understanding people as individuals – their likes, dislikes, goals, and passions. We’re currently building a picture of the hobbies and interests of the people we support across Mirus.

Working alongside our new volunteer, Menna, we’re gathering information about the things people enjoy, want to try, and would like more opportunities to do. This will help us identify shared interests, create new opportunities and strengthen connections within local communities.

We’re excited to see how this work will support real choice and opportunity for the people we support.
