Matthew is looking after his environment

In the six months that Matthew has lived at Geraint’s House he has taken on increasing responsibility for making the house and garden look the best it can. Matthew mows the lawns and keeps the garden looking immaculate, and makes sure that both inside and outside the house are free from litter and clutter. Matthew said:

“The compliments that I receive from visitors makes all the hard work worthwhile. I feel really happy and proud that I can make this house a wonderful home for everyone to enjoy.”

Once he was used to his new routine, Matthew was ready for the next step. He told mirus staff that he would like to start cooking homemade meals. Together they explored how they could use technology to assist Matthew to achieve his goal.

Curry is Matthew’s favourite meal, and he was keen to start his cooking journey with something he already loves. Matthew used his Alexa Echo device to find recipe and ingredient lists.

“I asked Alexa to tell me about different types of curry before selecting one I thought I would enjoy. She spoke the ingredients to me and I wrote a shopping list, and a recipe card with all cooking steps listed to save for later.”

Matthew found the step-by-step guide provided by Alexa really helpful as he cooked his favourite meal. The result was a delicious, healthy home-cooked curry that tasted and smelled amazing.

Following his success, he decided it was time for another challenge; cooking for other people. Matthew has children, and told staff that he wanted his children to visit him on his own without support being present. mirus staff worked together with Matthew and his family to make it happen.

In preparation for the visit, Matthew used Alexa to list the ingredients he needed to make a pizza from scratch. He bought the items and got to work cooking a meal that his children loved. He also brought games and beauty items and played with them together with his children. The day they spent together was really enjoyable.

Matthew’s next idea was to learn to ride a bike again, and with the support of his family and mirus staff he soon made this happen. Matthew now has his own bike and goes on regular rides with his family and staff members, which has massively increased his confidence and independence.

There’s no holding Matthew back!
