Why were they nominated?

Stephanie N, supported by Mirus in Cardiff

Together

Stephanie’s a familiar face at the Stronger Communities group—she rarely misses a session, and always shows up with warmth and energy.

What stands out is the way she looks out for other people. She checks in, makes sure everyone feels included, and helps to create a space that’s welcoming and supportive. It’s not something she’s been asked to do—she just does it, because that’s who she is.

She brings a lovely balance of humour, care, and thoughtfulness to the group, and she’s a big part of why it works so well.

Berian J, supported by Mirus in Ystradgynlais

Responsible

Berian had been a dedicated volunteer at the local food bank for two years, and its recent closure hit him hard—it was a big part of his routine, and something he cared about deeply.

But Berian didn’t let that stop him. With support from his team, he looked at what else he might enjoy and ended up joining the community gardens as a volunteer. He’s now helping out there twice a week—and loving it.

Berian has a real passion for gardening, and it’s been great to see him doing something that brings him joy while continuing to make a difference in the community. His willingness to adapt, and his commitment to helping others, are really inspiring.

Tara J, supported by Mirus in Swansea

Courageous

Tara has faced some really tough challenges in recent months—including being unwell and losing her cat—but she’s met them with honesty, strength, and a determination to take charge of her own support.

She’s been open with staff, reached out for help when she’s needed it, and made some big decisions about what she wants and needs. It’s not always been easy, but she’s kept going, even on the hard days.

Tara’s resilience and willingness to speak up for herself deserve recognition. She’s taken real steps to stay in control of her own wellbeing, and that takes both effort and courage.

Nathan R, supported by Mirus in Swansea

Together

Nathan is someone who quietly gets on with making life better for the people around him.

He’s always there for his neighbours—picking up shopping, being a listening ear, and helping out when things are tough. He does it with real care and compassion. His sense of humour and easy-going nature uplift people when they need it most.

Nathan doesn’t just offer help—he offers warmth, reassurance, and friendship. That’s something special, and it means a lot to the people around him.

Neda Arshadi, Mirus team member in Cardiff

Together

I’d like to recognise Neda for the care and thought she’s put into creating something that didn’t exist before—but really needed to.

She saw that there wasn’t a women-only group for the people we support in Cardiff, and decided to set one up. It took real initiative and courage to do it, and she’s stuck with it to make sure it works well for the people who come along.

The group is growing every week, and people have said how positive and welcoming it feels. Neda has made space for people to connect in a way that feels safe and right for them—and it’s made a real difference.

This is a great example of someone noticing a gap, listening to what matters, and making change happen.

Gabriel Smarandache, Mirus team member in Ystradgynlais

Together

Gabriel joined a new team recently and began supporting a young woman—something that hadn’t been done before in that service, as it’s the first time a male team member had supported a female person living there.

There was some understandable caution from the person’s family at first, but Gabriel’s respectful, calm and adaptable approach quickly made an impression. He’s built a great relationship with both the person he supports and her family, and they’ve said how much they value the support he’s giving.

It’s clear the person he supports feels at ease with him—she shows it in the way she responds to him and the time they spend together.

Gabriel’s made what could have been a tricky transition feel smooth and natural. He’s become a trusted part of the team and is already making a positive impact.

Kelsey Fray, Mirus team member in Swansea

Respectful

It was a tough day at Park Road when one of the people we support had to take their much-loved cat to the vet. Sadly, the news wasn’t good, and it became clear that the kindest thing to do was to say goodbye.

Kelsey was brilliant throughout. She showed real care and calmness in what was an emotional and distressing situation. She stayed alongside the person, helped them take in what was happening, and supported them to make a very difficult decision.

Her kindness, steady presence, and sensitivity made a big difference that day. She didn’t just support practically—she offered real emotional support when it was needed most.

Special mentions go to this incredible team who also received a nomination.

Brecon (non-complex) team

The whole Brecon non-complex team deserves recognition for the way they’ve worked together over the past few weeks.

With their locality manager and team leaders off, and a new service opening at the same time, things haven’t been straightforward. Shifts have changed at short notice, and there’s been a lot to juggle—but the team has stayed calm, flexible, and focused on supporting each other and the people we support.

Their patience, teamwork, and willingness to adapt have made a real difference—and haven’t gone unnoticed.
