Our Carers Week event

To celebrate Carers Week, we hosted a Carers event at one of our Cardiff Respite houses to recognise all the fantastic work unpaid carers do and answer any questions they had.

Carers Week is a great way to raise awareness about caring, highlight the challenges faced by unpaid carers, and recognise the impact carers have on families and communities. This year’s theme is Putting Carers on the Map, providing a chance to recognise carers nationally – especially during an election year, by campaigning for much-needed recognition and support.

At Mirus, we offer respite so that both the carer and the person they care for can enjoy a good break. We can support people in our two respite houses in Cardiff or, with more planning, on a UK holiday. During their stay with us, people can keep their usual routine alongside learning independent life skills.

One carer said:

“It’s important that the person I care for has a good break at the same time that I have a good break when using respite.”

Some of the Mirus Management Team attended the Carers event to answer questions from carers about our supported living services and how respite supports the transition. Many carers worry about the future care of their loved ones when they can no longer provide it themselves – we were pleased to answer their questions and provide reassurance.

Many carers and families had great things to say about respite, and so did staff. One support worker said:

“I have worked in respite for 18 years, and I absolutely love it!”

The event was also an opportunity for us to listen and learn from feedback given by unpaid carers. Carers appreciate how respite helps the person they care for experience life more independently. Respite is a great way to prepare people for future transitions into supported living.

Nicola, who has been using our respite service for 25 years expressed her enjoyment. She said:

“I love staying with respite – I get to do more things here than I usually do.”

At our event on Carers Rights Day last November, we asked carers what is important to them, and we have spent the last six months working towards improving things.

A carer said:

“I’d like to have access to all the information I need in one place rather than having to go hunting for it. I don’t always have time to look, and we could be missing out on lots of great opportunities!”

In response, we have created an online respite information book so people can find the information they need in one place. It gives carers peace of mind, knowing that the person they care for is supported and will enjoy their stay.

As an organisation, we’re pleased to celebrate and support carers, providing them with the recognition and break they deserve. While there’s always more to be done, we’re proud to contribute to making a positive impact.
