Alex and Adam present to the Welsh Government

On Tuesday 31st October, Alex and Adam who are supported by mirus in Cardiff and Maesteg, presented for the final time at the Welsh Government’s Learning Disability: Talk To Us event. This time the event was held in the Welsh Government Offices in Cardiff.

At the events, which have been held in Llandudno, Carmarthenshire and Cardiff, people with disabilities and their support networks have given feedback to the Welsh Government about what is good in Wales, what could be better, and what people would like to change in the future.

The process followed at the events was a lot like the Better Together process we use in mirus. Alex and Adam told people all about the Better Together process, and what their role is as mirus reps.

The process:

  • First, we hold a person-centred review with each person and their circle of support, where we ask people what is working in their lives, what is not working, and what needs to change for the future.
  • After we’ve collected that information from everyone, we work with our mirus reps, who are people supported that represent the region that they live in, to look at common themes across where they live. We use these common themes to make our regional plans.
  • Once we know the common themes for each region that mirus works in, we look for themes that are common across all regions. That’s how we make our organisation plan for the future!

Alex and Adam also talked about how they have been involved in recruiting their own support staff, as well as staff for central teams – including for our new Chief Executive!

Their speech went down extremely well with the audience, with comments such as “They’re role models” and “they delivered their speech with passion.”
